This law aims to protect individuals who engage in public interest activities from meritless lawsuits and abusive legal proceedings. It seeks to prevent 'Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation' (SLAPP), which are often used to silence journalists, activists, and whistleblowers through intimidation and excessive legal costs. Citizens, journalists, and civil society organizations in Cyprus will be protected from retaliatory legal actions. The law establishes safeguards to ensure that legal processes are not weaponized to suppress freedom of expression or public debate.
