Mission & Goals
The organization's mission is to develop and commercialize novel, sustainable food and feed ingredients produced via microbial fermentation using renewable inputs. Our activities relate primarily to EU food law and biotechnology regulation, in particular the authorisation, safety assessment, and regulatory framework for novel foods and novel food ingredients under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. We also follow EU-level developments concerning food safety risk assessment, sustainable food systems, and industrial biotechnology, insofar as these impact the regulatory requirements, market access, and labelling of fermentation-derived food ingredients within the European Union. Engagement with EU institutions is relevant to ensure that evolving EU legislation and implementing practices are informed by up-to-date scientific evidence and reflect the specific characteristics of fermentation-based food production.
EU Legislative Interests
Influencing activities have related in particular to: • Proposal for a Regulation establishing a framework of measures for strengthening the Union’s biotechnology and biomanufacturing sectors (European Biotech Act, COM(2025) 1022; often referred to as Biotech Act II), insofar as it concerns industrial and food biotechnology and the scaling up of fermentation based production processes • Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 on novel foods, including its interaction with broader EU biotechnology and biomanufacturing policy developments • EFSA scientific risk assessment processes and guidance relevant to fermentation derived food ingredients Activities consisted of providing scientific and technical information on fermentation based food biotechnology, with the aim of supporting evidence based policymaking and implementation of EU legislation in this area.
Communication Activities
