Mission & Goals
The Human Rights Consortium is a broad-based coalition of almost 165 member organisations from across Northern Ireland civil society. We provide a coherent, unified, non-party political coalition for civic society groups to campaign together for the recognition, protection and implementation of human rights standards in Northern Ireland. We work together to achieve this through collaboration across different sectors and issues - from grass roots community and neighbourhood associations, representative bodies and issue based sectoral organisations, right through to trade unions and charities of all sizes. Collectively our members represent hundreds of thousands of people from across Northern Ireland. Our work involves research and analysis of existing threats and gaps in rights protections, challenging decision makers to use and protect existing human rights instruments and standards, raising awareness and support for rights and advocating for enhanced human rights protections.

Communication Activities
Since the UK Brexit referendum in 2016 the Consortium has conducted research, collaboration and advocacy to ensure that the UK Government’s approach to withdrawal from the EU respected the rule of law, protected human rights standards and the Northern Ireland peace process. We ensured that Community and Voluntary Sector voices and concerns on human rights deficits from Brexit were highlighted as an ongoing issue within EU-UK Withdrawal negotiations and advocated for specific human rights protections for Northern Ireland to uphold the particular importance of EU human rights standards to the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. The development of distinct protection for human rights standards within Article 2 of the Ireland/Northern Ireland Protocol was an important milestone and we continue to work to create awareness of this legislation, safeguard it against dilution and ensure other important human rights standards and legal protections are defended following the UK’s exit from the EU.
