Mission & Goals
Founded in 1999 by Robert ‘Bro’ Russell, Cartoonists Rights was the first global human rights organisation to focus on the need for protection of editorial and political cartoonist to carry out their work without fear of recrimination. Our work has helped cartoonists all over the world with legal, financial, emotional and moral assistance. Our clients are cartoonists variously abused, criminalised, displaced, and/or threatened because of material they have drawn. Alternating with our partners the Freedom Cartoonists Foundation (Geneva) we present a bi-annual award recognising the exceptional courage and resilience of cartoonists facing direct violations of their freedom of expression. We maintain a memorandum of understanding with Cartooning for Peace (Paris) working closely with them on advocacy for cartoonists, and rendering assistance to them.
