Mission & Goals
Bulgarian Organic Foods Ltd. is a recognised Producer Organisation in the apiculture sector, uniting registered beekeepers for the production and marketing of honey and bee products. Its core mission is to plan and align production with market demand, concentrate supply, and enhance the economic sustainability and competitiveness of its members. The organisation promotes high-quality, traceable and safe products through coordinated processing, quality control and market access, in compliance with EU standards and certification schemes. It supports members through technical assistance, innovation and sustainable practices, including organic beekeeping, biodiversity protection and climate resilience, while operating across the full value chain from apiary to market. The organisation also contributes at national level to policy development, including the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the National Strategic Plan for Agriculture, and is a member of the Bulgarian Agrarian Chamber.
EU Legislative Interests
Bulgarian Organic Foods Ltd., as a recognised Producer Organisation in the apiculture sector, is engaged in EU policy discussions related to the integrity, transparency and sustainability of the honey market. Our activities focus on legislative and policy frameworks addressing honey authenticity, fair competition, consumer protection and the resilience of the EU beekeeping sector. A primary area of interest is the ongoing revision and implementation of the Honey Directive (2001/110/EC), including stricter rules on origin labelling (clear indication of countries of origin and proportions), improved definitions of honey, and harmonised methods for detecting adulteration. We strongly support the introduction of advanced analytical methods, including NMR profiling and other validated techniques, to ensure effective enforcement against fraud and mislabelling. We also follow closely EU initiatives on food fraud prevention and official controls, including Regulation (EU) 2017/625, as well as the work of the European Commission and the EU Food Fraud Network. Strengthening laboratory capacity, harmonising testing methodologies across Member States, and ensuring consistent enforcement are key priorities to safeguard the internal market. Another important policy area is the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), in particular sectoral interventions for apiculture under the CAP Strategic Plans. We are actively engaged at national level in shaping measures that support beekeepers’ income stability, investment in processing and marketing, and environmental services provided by pollinators. We advocate for targeted support to Producer Organisations, improved access to funding for innovation and traceability systems, and measures addressing the impact of climate change on bee health and production. We are also interested in EU trade policy as it relates to honey imports, including tariff regimes, safeguard mechanisms, and controls on imported honey to ensure compliance with EU quality and safety standards. Ensuring a level playing field between EU producers and third-country imports is essential, particularly in light of increasing risks of adulterated or misdeclared honey entering the EU market. In addition, we follow EU policies on sustainability, biodiversity and environmental protection, including the EU Biodiversity Strategy and Farm to Fork Strategy, given the critical role of pollinators in ecosystems and agriculture. Supporting sustainable and organic beekeeping practices, reducing pesticide risks, and preserving biodiversity are key priorities aligned with EU Green Deal objectives. Finally, we support initiatives promoting supply chain transparency and traceability, including digital tools and data systems that allow verification of origin “from hive to consumer”. Strengthening cooperation between producers, authorities and research institutions is essential to improve market integrity and consumer trust. Through our membership in the Bulgarian Agrarian Chamber and our role as a Producer Organisation, we contribute to national and EU-level discussions aimed at strengthening the competitiveness, transparency and long-term sustainability of the European honey sector
Communication Activities

These activities have included international promotion campaigns in both EU and third-country markets, participation in trade fairs, B2B meetings, and communication initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of European honey, its origin, quality standards and traceability. The organisation has contributed to outreach activities targeting consumers and professional audiences, with a focus on strengthening trust in the honey market and promoting EU production standards. At national level, the organisation has implemented consumer-oriented campaigns, including product tastings, educational materials and large-scale surveys aimed at improving consumer awareness, promoting local and EU honey, and gathering data on consumer preferences and trust in the market. In addition, the organisation regularly participates in sectoral events, conferences and stakeholder dialogues at national and EU level, contributing to discussions on honey market integrity, food fraud risks, traceability systems and the development of policies affecting the apiculture sector.
