This procedure establishes the rules for the operation and use of the Schengen Information System (SIS). It is a large-scale database used by national authorities to share critical information on missing persons, stolen property, and individuals for whom a police or judicial alert has been issued to help maintain security across borders.

The system affects law enforcement agencies, judicial authorities, and travelers. It streamlines how EU member states exchange security data to better coordinate the fight against crime and manage external border controls.
