This procedure aims to assign additional responsibilities to the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (now known as EUIPO). By expanding its tasks, the EU seeks to better protect intellectual property rights and streamline the management of trademarks and designs across the Union.

This change affects businesses and creators who register trademarks and designs, as well as the agencies responsible for fighting counterfeiting and ensuring compliance with intellectual property standards.
