Amendment: Greenhouse gas emission allowance trading (Directive 96/61/EC)
This procedure establishes a system for trading greenhouse gas emission allowances within the European Union. By putting a price on carbon, it creates a financial incentive for companies to reduce their emissions and invest in cleaner technologies to combat climate change.
The scheme primarily affects heavy industrial plants, power stations, and aviation. It limits the total amount of greenhouse gases these sectors can emit, requiring them to hold allowances for every ton of CO2 they release.
