This law aims to create a safer digital space by holding online platforms more accountable for the content shared on their services. It establishes new rules for digital services, including social media, online marketplaces, and other intermediaries, to better protect users and their fundamental rights.

The Digital Services Act affects a wide range of online platforms operating within the EU, from very small startups to the largest global players. It introduces different obligations based on the size and role of the service, with stricter rules for those reaching a larger audience.

Key changes include new obligations for platforms to have clear terms of service, to act against illegal content more efficiently, and to be more transparent about their content moderation practices. Larger platforms will face additional requirements regarding risk assessment and mitigation.

The law introduces a clear framework for enforcement, with national authorities and the European Commission responsible for overseeing compliance. Fines for non-compliance can be significant, reaching up to 6% of a company's global annual turnover.
