The geography of EU spending

The 2024 EU budget distributed €168.6 billion in commitments across 27 member states. The per-capita map reveals patterns that aggregate figures obscure: Hungary and Poland remain the largest per-capita recipients by a significant margin, while Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands are the largest net contributors relative to population.

CAP concentration

Common Agricultural Policy payments remain heavily concentrated. France, Germany, Spain, Poland, Romania, and Italy together received 68% of all direct payment commitments despite representing 59% of EU agricultural land. The per-hectare payment inequality — a long-standing reform target — has narrowed but not closed.
