Mission & Goals
The ONA VE (SHE KNOWS) association is a non-profit association that strives to increase the proportion of women appearing in the media and at public events in the Republic of Slovenia, and to strengthen the visibility of female experts. The basic purpose is the connecting female experts and the mutual encouragement of women so that they will be more prepared to appear in the media and at public events and thereby contribute to greater equity/equality in the representation of women in the Republic of Slovenia.
EU Legislative Interests
ONA VE is focused on promoting women's voices in media and public events and target various EU policies and initiatives related to gender equality, media representation, and cultural diversity. Some key EU policies that might be relevant to their activities include: EU Gender Equality Strategy: EU's commitment to promoting gender equality across various sectors, including media. Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD): Advocacy efforts may target provisions that encourage diversity and gender equality in media content. Creative Europe Programme: Searching funding allocations and criteria to promote gender equality and diversity in media projects. EU Media Pluralism Monitor: Advocate for policies that enhance women's representation in media. European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE): Collaborate with EIGE to contribute data, research, and recommendations related to women's representation in the media.
Communication Activities
In 2024 and 2025, ONA VE implemented and coordinated a wide range of communication activities directly aligned with EU policies on gender equality, inclusive democracy, freedom of expression, and quality journalism. These activities included public events and conferences addressing the representation of women in the media and in decision-making positions; thematic debates and roundtables bringing together policymakers, journalists, and women experts from diverse fields; and targeted training workshops for media professionals focused on gender-balanced reporting and the use of inclusive language. ONA VE also led and contributed to national and European awareness-raising campaigns aimed at increasing the visibility of women experts in public discourse, including data-driven media campaigns based on systematic monitoring and research. A key pillar of this work was ONA VE’s role as the national coordinator of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP), the world’s longest-running research initiative on gender representation in the news, through which the organisation contributed to evidence-based analysis and international comparisons. In addition, ONA VE produced publications and analytical reports examining gender equality in Slovenian media and situating these findings within the broader European policy framework, including Beijing+30 and the EU Gender Equality Strategy. Communication outputs also included online content, social media campaigns, newsletters, and media briefings designed to inform and engage the public. All activities were conceived to strengthen democratic dialogue, support EU values and policies on equality and fundamental rights, and enhance the visibility and recognition of women’s expertise in the public sphere.
