Mission & Goals

Young Academies Science Advice Structure (YASAS) is a network of Young Academies from across Europe, with the mission to empower early‑ and mid‑career researchers (EMCRs) by providing them with a strong, independent voice in science advice and European policymaking. It seeks to deepen the exchange between European Young Academies, as well as support EMCRs with networking, training and policymaker engagement, ensuring that young researchers can more effectively interact with policymakers and shape evidence-based decision-making. YASAS contributes to the European Commission's Scientific Advice Mechanism by being part of the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) consortium.

EU Legislative Interests

YASAS actively contributes to Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA). SAPEA is a consortium of academy networks, representing over 120 academies from various countries, and is funded by Horizon Europe. YASAS nominates experts through its member academies to participate in the development of Evidence Review Reports and other science-based outputs aimed at informing EU policy. These reports cover a wide range of topics, including plastic pollution, food systems, climate and energy, health, and crisis management. Within SAPEA, YASAS takes an active role in promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in science advisory processes, aligning its efforts with EU strategies such as the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 and the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan 2020-2025.

Communication Activities

YASAS contributes to a range of communication and outreach activities related to SAPEA’s publicly available reports, which are widely disseminated across EU institutions and relevant stakeholder networks. These activities include webinars, workshops, and high-level panel discussions. In addition, YASAS leads workshops, participates in public-facing events, and contributes to consultations on EDI within the SAPEA consortium. These efforts aim to integrate EDI principles into science advice processes and align with relevant EU strategies.

Member Of

YASAS is one of the six networks which are part of the SAPEA consortium along with ALLEA, EASAC, FEAM, Euro-CASE and Academia Europaea. SAPEA is part of the European Commission's Scientific Advice Mechanism, and its role is to provide independent, high-quality reviews of the evidence to inform the policy recommendations made by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors. https://scientificadvice.eu/about-us/sapea/our-networks/ YASAS is a formalised part of the European Network of Young Academies (ENYA), which is a platform for collaboration and exchange among national and regional young academies across Europe. It was officially launched in 2022 to strengthen the collective voice of early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) in Europe and to support their involvement in science-policy processes and advocacy for research careers. https://fka.mta.hu/en/nemzetkozi_kapcsolat/european-network-of-young-academies-enya/
