Mission & Goals

WWF Portugal is a Portuguese non-profit association legally recognized as an ENGO, that works in alignment with the global vision and strategy of WWF. The mission of WWF Portugal is to protect and recover nature and fight climate change. WWF Portugal runs projects to meet its conservation goals in each of its six main themes (Restore Ecosystems, Protect Species, Sustainable Food Systems, Climate, People, and Elevate Nature), in partnership with farmers, fishers and forest producers, governmental organizations (nature conservation, fisheries management, forest management, etc.; national/regional/municipal levels), and the corporate sector. Through its work, it seeks to influence public policies at the EU and national levels.

EU Legislative Interests

We currently follow these files: Common Fisheries Policy, Common Agriculture Policy, deforestation, implementation of the Nature Restoration Law, implementation of several directives (Water Framework Directive, Birds and Habitats Directives, Natura 2000 Network, Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Integrated Maritime Policy, European Green Deal (Biodiversity Strategy, Farm to Fork Strategy, etc.), Multiannual Financial Framework, and the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism. By following these files we mean we are accompanying the related legislative processes, from problem definition to impact assessment of their implementation.

Communication Activities

WWF Portugal liaises with Portuguese MEPs on conservation matters of national relevance, by making its views known to them, and conveying information demonstrating the relevance of our positions and views (factsheets, reports, letters, etc.). We participate in campaigns (e.g., deforestation law) and occasionally in events targeting MEPs and other legislators.

Organisation Members

WWF is a global network operating in over 100 countries. Within the European Union, WWF has independent offices established under national law in over 17 countries. The WWF European Policy Programme acts as the coordinator for EU policy across the WWF network and is established under Belgian law as an AISBL. The majority of WWF’s global activities related to EU policy are reported through the registration of the WWF European Policy Programme under REG number 1414929419-24. WWF offices in the EU may also engage directly with EU institutions. As these offices are independent legal entities and there is no hierarchical relationship between the WWF European Policy Programme and the national offices, WWF has chosen to register all of its offices individually in the Transparency Register. This approach ensures full transparency and provides complementary and accurate information across all registrations. Any information provided through this registration complements the information submitted under the registration of the WWF European Policy Programme. All of WWF Portugal's members are natural persons.
