Mission & Goals

The Wuppertal Institute is an implementation-oriented research institute with roots in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and a global horizon. Together with our stakeholders, we shape transformation processes aimed at a future in which global warming is reduced to a tolerable level and Earth’s resources are managed in such a way that all of its inhabitants can enjoy a good life within the planetary boundaries. The research carried out by the Institute focuses on specific social problems with the aim of building a better understanding of change processes as well as generating target and system knowledge, thereby allowing the Institute to serve as a catalyst for transformation processes. Our institute primarily follows EU policies and funding programs related to climate, environment, and energy, as these are inherently linked to sustainable development.

EU Legislative Interests

The Wuppertal Institute engages in a wide range of scientific consultancy and research activities to support the EU’s transition to climate neutrality; the following list represents a selection of the most significant legislative dossiers and strategic initiatives currently addressed through our work: -European Green Deal (COM/2019/640) and European Climate Law: Providing scientific support for decarbonisation pathways and EU climate diplomacy. This includes EU-CHINA BRIDGE, which bridges European and Chinese expertise on technology roadmaps for energy-intensive industries, and NDC ASPECTS, which provides critical inputs for the Global Stocktake (GST) and future NDCs in sectors such as Transport, Industry, and Buildings. -EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change (COM/2021/82): Through ACCLIMATE, we work to enhance integrated national and international strategies for climate-resilient development and improve the transparency of global emission reduction commitments. -Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy (COM/2020/789): Through CENTRe/SOLUTIONSplus, the Institute acts as a global catalyst for innovative electromobility, testing and scaling tailored solutions (e.g., e-bus charging, e-motorbikes) via "Living Labs." -Industrial Transformation and Circular Economy: Through TRANSIENCE, we target the decarbonization of European heavy industry towards 2050, using the open-source MIC3 model to integrate circularity with climate mitigation. The Wuppertal Institute participates in various calls for proposals of the EU research program (e.g. HORIZON Europe). The Wuppertal Institute is not a lobby organization, but an independent, non-profit implementation-oriented research institute. Communication: The Wuppertal Institute is committed to communicate our scientific research results as transparently as possible to policy makers as well as to the general public. Our full list of publications is accessible at our website: https://epub.wupperinst.org/home
