Mission & Goals

The ocean is an interconnected global ecosystem supporting a wide range of uses. Maintaining a healthy ocean requires responsible stewardship by all users. The ocean supports a growing range and level of commercial use and other activities. Concerns about the impacts of economic activity on ocean health from increasing use are on the rise. These concerns may limit industry access to marine areas and resources. Ocean users, including those who simply rely on shipping to move goods, are increasingly being held accountable by governments and NGOs for the state of the ocean. Continued ocean access and use will increasingly require the social license to operate - above and beyond simple regulatory compliance - and participation in Sustainable Development Goals.

EU Legislative Interests

The World Ocean Council follows closely the development and/or implementation of various policies, including but not limited to: European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) EU Strategy on Offshore Renewable Energy Blue Economy Strategy Directive on Maritime Spatial Planning Regulation on the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification of Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Maritime Transport (MRV Regulation) Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 Water Framework Directive Marine Strategy Framework Directive Renewable Energy Directive II Directive on Port Reception Facilities for the Delivery of Waste from Ships

Communication Activities

The World Ocean Council engages with EU institutions primarily through informational outreach and stakeholder engagement activities that focus on the sustainable development of the marine and maritime sectors. Our activities include the participation in EU Consultations related to maritime and ocean policies, providing insights and feedback from the perspective of the ocean business community (for instance the recent EU Ocean Pact Consultation). We also prepare on an ad hoc basis policy briefs on relevant EU policies for our members.
