Mission & Goals
Founded in 2016 and unique in its kind in Italy, Women In International Security Italy (WIIS Italy) is a non-profit association dedicated to promoting women’s participation, influence, and leadership in the fields of peace, security, and international affairs. Its overarching objective is to promote more inclusive, peaceful and secure societies, by leveraging the essential contribution of women. Over the year it has developed a specific expertise on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda and women’s participation in peace mediation at different level, cooperating with different actors. It is the co-founder and implementing partner of the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network. WIIS Italy is affiliated to WIIS global network, established in 1987, which today comprises nearly 50 indipendent affiliated associations worldwide. It is an independent and autonomous association, registered in Italy, with its own governance structure, board, specific objectives, and programme.
EU Legislative Interests
Policies in the areas of Women, Peace and Security Agenda; security; defence; foreign affairs; gender equality; mediation and MENA region. WIIS Italy has a specific focus on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, mediation and MENA region. Its activities aim to contribute to policy discussions related to the EU’s Women, Peace and Security agenda, as well as initiatives concerning mediation and the Mediterranean region. These include, for example, the New Pact for the Mediterranean and its associated Action Plan, related pilot initiatives, as well as relevant engagements, invitations, and initiatives involving the European Parliament Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and other EU institutions and actors.

WIIS Italy is affiliated to WIIS global network, which today comprises nearly 50 indipendent affiliated associations worldwide: https://wiisglobal.org/international-affiliates/. Our affiliation with the WIIS global network reflects a shared overarching mission—namely the promotion of women’s leadership in international security—but each affiliated organisation operates independently, with distinct priorities, governance, and activities. WIIS Italy also contributes to other networks's activities, such as EPLO and the Global Alliance of Regional Women Mediator Networks. It is the co-founder and implementing partner of the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network and the co-founder of the Italian Network for International Mediation.
