Mission & Goals
WITNESS helps people use video and technology to protect and defend human rights. Our model bridges deep grassroots support with broad reach and sustained impact on the technology and policy systems that set the terms for how frontline activism and journalism can be secure and effective. We directly support thousands of frontline human rights defenders and community media partners with the training and skills to tell their stories and strengthen the credibility of their video documentation. Alongside this, we equip millions of activists in social justice movements with tailored guidance and resources to help them defend human rights in an increasingly complex digital world. Finally, we shape technology policy and infrastructure at the systems level to ensure that billions worldwide benefit from technologies that will minimize harm and maximize opportunity for good Our team has a global reach, working with community media, journalists, and human rights defenders in over 130 countries.
