Mission & Goals
As a fully state-owned, non-profit organisation with a specific service mandate, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd is part of Finland's innovation system and operates under the mandate of the Ministry of Economc Affairs and Employment and receives budget funding from the state. As an impartial non-profit Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) and with the national mandate and mission to support economic competitiveness, societal development and innovation, VTT carries out research and innovation activities for the needs of industry and knowledge-based society.
EU Legislative Interests
Horizon Europe2.0: Member of the national coordination group, with the task to advise the Finnish Government EU Affairs Department on sector-specific preparation of European Council meetings and on actions relating to institutional questions and general development of the EU. European Competitiveness Fund: Member of the national coordination group, with the task to advise the Finnish Government EU Affairs Department on sector-specific preparation of European Council meetings and on actions relating to institutional questions and general development of the EU. Structural Funds / RIS3: Member of the Coordination Committees (MYR) within Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council and Council of Oulu Region, with the task to develop and implement the regions' Smart Specialisation Strategy EU RDI policies on a broad basis: Member of EARTO European Association of Research and Technology Organisations
Communication Activities
Over the years, VTT has gained vast experience from participation and coordination of numerous European RDI projects. By June 2025, VTT has started 245 Horizon Europe projects, with a total 187M€ net EU contribution, 20 EURATOM projects (8,6M€ net EU contribution), 8 projects in Digital Europe (7M€ net EU contribution) and 14 projects in the European Defence Fund (14,5M€ net EU contribution). Communication activities are held during the running of the project and as part of the following networks and associations: European Innovation Partnerships (EIP): Raw Materials, Smart Cities and Communities, Water European Industrial Alliances: Circular Plastic Alliance, Battery Alliance, Clean Hydrogen Alliance and Industrial Alliance for Processors and Semiconductors Institutionalized partnerships in Horizon Europe: Chips (Key Digital Technologies -KDT), Smart Networks and Services (SNS), European Metrology, Clean Hydrogen, SESAR3-ATM air traffic management, Circular Bio-based Europe (CBE), Food EIT and Raw Materials EIT. Co-programmed partnerships in Horizon Europe: MadeinEurope (MiE), Processes4Planet (P4P), Innovative Materials for EU, Virtual worlds, Textiles of the Future, Build4People (B4P), AI&Data&Robotics, Globally competitive Space Systems , Photonics, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM), Batteries, Zero-emission Waterborne Transport, Zero-Emission Road Transport.
