Mission & Goals
The European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) is a non-profit association dedicated to strengthening the infrastructure for Citizen Science in Europe. ECSA supports the growth of citizen science by building sustainable frameworks, networks, and digital platforms that enable citizens, researchers, and decision-makers to collaborate. Our work focuses on developing and maintaining tools, standards, and knowledge resources that make citizen participation in science more effective, inclusive, and impactful. By fostering these infrastructures, ECSA advances the understanding, integration, and use of Citizen Science for research, innovation, and evidence-based policy-making.
EU Legislative Interests
ECSA is following the following EU directives: Biodiversity; Environment and climate change; Waste and Resource Management; Air Quality; Water Quality; Land contamination and soils;and Spatial diversity.
Communication Activities
ECSA currently produces a newsletter, organises meetings and an annual general assembly which is held at different venues across Europe. We are holding a biannual conference on Citizen Science in Europe. In 2020 this conference will take place in Trieste on Encounters in SC. We work with our members organisations through a series of working groups as follows: Sharing Best Practice and Building Capacity Projects, Data, Tools, and Technology Policy, Strategy, Governance and Partnerships Learning and Education in Citizen Science Citizen Science and Open Science BioBlitzes Global Mosquito Alert Air Quality Empowerment, Inclusiveness, Equity Citizen Science Networks

ECSA has in place a Memorandum of Understanding with: the Citizen Science Association (CSA) an International Citizen Science organisation and the Austrialian Citizen Science Association (ACSA) to support the International Journal Citizen Science: Theory and Practice; with RRI Tools to exchange best practice on RRI, with EU PRIO in order to enhance communication; with EU BON to work together on data standards and tools
