Mission & Goals

The University of Crete is a public higher education and research institution committed to excellence in teaching, research and academic development. Its mission is to generate and transmit scientific knowledge, educate new scientists and scholars, and contribute to the advancement of culture and society. Its remit includes undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education, research across a broad range of disciplines, lifelong learning, international academic cooperation, quality assurance, and the promotion of innovation, scientific dialogue and links between research, education and society at regional, national, European and international level.

The University of Crete is a member of the INGENIUM European University alliance and forms part of the EURAXESS European network for the mobility of researchers. It is also a member of EARMA - The European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA) is a community at the heart of the European Research Area (ERA), its purpose is to help research projects run smoothly, contribute to policy consultations, and build a community of like-minded professionals. It also participates in institutional networks and partnerships supporting research, internationalisation and sustainability, including SDSN Greece and Scholars at Risk (SAR / SAR Greece). The University is associated with a wider regional research and innovation ecosystem in Crete, including long-standing partnerships and synergies with FORTH, HCMR, the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PagNi), the Technical University of Crete and the Hellenic Mediterranean University.
