Mission & Goals

Founded in 1911, the University of Porto (U.Porto) is a benchmark institution for Higher Education and Scientific Research in Portugal and one of the top European Universities according to the most relevant international ranking systems. U.Porto combines high quality education focused on individual vocations and talents as well as market needs with the claim to being the greatest birthplace of science and research in Portugal. Indeed, it is the umbilical relationship between learning and creating knowledge that justifies the classification of the U.Porto as a Research University. Being open to the community and business is the main trademark of the U.Porto. The U.Porto creates leaders, promotes innovators and encourages entrepreneurs. In short, it trains people who can make a difference in their communities. Currently, the U.Porto is the most international of Portugal’s universities thanks to its active cooperation with hundreds of higher education institutions worldwide.

EU Legislative Interests

U.Porto currently follows a myriad of EU policies and initiatives in diverse domains such as agriculture, environment, energy, culture and media, education, justice, health & public health, social affairs, transport, science and technology, and mobility. The combination of structural funds (including territorial cooperation programmes - INTERREG) with national subsidies enables U.Porto to pursue and develop high-end and impactful activities and projects at a local, national and international level. Specifically at a European level, U.Porto shows a significant track record and participation in R&D+i projects funded directly by the European Commission as well as mobility and lifelong programmes (Erasmus+, Erasmus Mundus, and others). Since 2008, U.Porto’s participation in EU projects and initiatives has increased and widened, covering different 1) R&D+i programmes like FPs FP7, H2020 and Horizon Europe, 2) education, mobility and lifelong training programmes, like Erasmus+, and 3) other programmes like Justice, Rights, Equality and Citizenship, Third Health, former Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), Internal Security Fund – Police, Union Civil Protection Mechanism, and the European Institute of Innovation & Technology KICs, in a total over 240 ongoing projects (data march 2024).

Communication Activities

U.Porto’s activities in the context of EU policies include a variety of research, development, and communication initiatives directly tied to European Union programs and objectives. U.Porto is actively involved in the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH), a strategic partnership developed under the European Commission’s European Universities Initiative. This partnership involves Université Paris-Saclay, Lund University, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, University of Szeged, and U.Porto, and was recently expanded with the approval of the EUGLOH 2.0 project to include the University of Alcalá, The Arctic University of Norway, University of Novi Sad, and Universität Hamburg. Through EUGLOH, U.Porto collaborates on interdisciplinary education and training initiatives that address EU-wide health and well-being challenges, especially within the areas of biomedicine, life sciences, and social sciences. Activities include interfaculty workshops, training sessions, and publications on health topics relevant to EU policy frameworks. As part of its EU-focused communication strategy, U.Porto undertakes scientific dissemination efforts that involve EU-funded research and collaboration projects. Communication tools for these activities include U.Porto's social media channels (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube), newsletters targeting European researchers and partners, and updates through mailing lists for industry associations and stakeholders across Europe. These communication efforts aim to foster engagement with EU institutions, promote the outcomes of EU-funded research, and contribute to dialogues on EU science and innovation policy. Additionally, U.Porto participates in EU-backed outreach events and conferences, sharing insights and project outcomes aligned with EU research priorities. Key initiatives include contributions to EU thematic clusters, policy alignment discussions, and publications that address EU societal challenges. By integrating these projects and communication activities into its EU partnerships, U.Porto aligns its R&D efforts with EU policy objectives and fosters international collaboration within the European Research Area.
