Mission & Goals

The University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) is the country’s newest University. USN is headed by Rector Pia Cecilie Bing-Jonsson. The Rector reports to USN's Board, which is chaired by Professor Tore Isaksen. We have around 18,000 students and around 2,200 staff, spread over eight campuses: Drammen, Vestfold, Kongsberg, Ringerike, Bø, Notodden, Porsgrunn and Rauland. The University of South-Eastern Norway aims to have a regional foundation yet internationally competitive, and with eight campuses, we have a strong and clear presence in one of Norway’s most exciting and dynamic regions. Increased internationalization of education and research is a key goal for the University. USN is an internationally oriented, regionally based and entrepreneurial university with a strong work community and with society and industry as close collaborative partners. Through professional and industry-oriented research and education, the university contributes knowledge and skills.

EU Legislative Interests

All EU initiatives related to research, education and innovation such as EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon Europe), FP10 and EU Programme in the fields of education, training, youth and sport (ERASMUS+). Staff in the Internationalisation Unit and Research and Innovation Unit work with mobilisation and communication internally in our organisation. Projects which we are involved in a number of cases wish to provide knowledge for future policy making. Through EU funded projects e.g. Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe projects USN may participate in the following types of activities covered by the Register: - organising or participating in meetings, conferences or events - preparing or commissioning policy and position papers, amendments, opinion polls, surveys, etc. e.g. through our participation in YERUN- the Young European Research Universities Network. In addition USN sometimes provides input to public hearings and consultations directly via Commission open channels

Communication Activities

We have approximately 30 research and innovation projects funded under Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020 and associated programs in the areas of nanotechnology, maritime training, safety and logistics, ecology, health, immersive technologies, energy, CCUS, drone safety and transport. We coordinate a small amount of these. Academic staff are involved in these projects. We are partner in about 14 centrally funded Erasmus projects including an European University Alliance- EDUC.
