Mission & Goals
The UGS, representing the interests of Greek-owned commercial vessels over 3,000 gt under the Greek flag, as well as EU/EEA and third country flags, follows closely and participates actively in the development of shipping policy, regulation and legislation, both at international and EU level. The UGS engages constructively in the formulation of balanced and realistic collective industry positions and recommendations through its active participation in international and European shipping organisations.
EU Legislative Interests
The UGS is actively engaged across a broad range of policy files, including, inter alia, market access and international trade, maritime piracy and security, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), FuelEU Maritime, the Energy Taxation Directive, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV), the Maritime Safety Package, the Green Deal Industrial Plan, ship recycling, air emissions, and seafarers’ rights. In addition, the UGS closely follows developments related to Free Trade Agreements, taxation and customs matters, ports policy, safety and environmental regulation, competition, sanctions, migration, ocean governance, and maritime spatial planning. The UGS also monitors and contributes to numerous legislative and policy initiatives affecting the competitiveness and sustainability of the shipping sector, including the EU Maritime Industrial Strategy, the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan, and the EU Port Strategy.

Additional Information
With regard to the estimation of the annual costs related to activities covered by the register, the Union of Greek Shipowners spends around 900 thousand to 1 million euros per year. These expenses include: - the reimbursement of the UGS EU Representative, who is based in Brussels - Brussels office rental costs - membership to the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) - costs related to the flights of UGS employees visiting Brussels - costs related to events (European Shipping Summit 2023) - costs related to remuneration of UGS employees and counsels of the Greek legal entity dealing with EU matters. In addition and in order to proceed with the annual UGS update in the EU Transparency Register, relevant information from the UGS Balance Sheet (31.12.2023) is listed herebelow: REVENUES UGS’ revenues result from annual membership fees, subscription fees and bank deposit interests. In this context, on 31.12.2023 UGS’ total revenues amounted to € 6,029,910.73. EXPENSES On 31.12.2023 UGS’ total expenses amounted to € 3,944,862.01. RESERVE On 31.12.2023 UGS’ reserve for the fiscal year 2023 amounted to € 2,085,048.72.
