Mission & Goals

UIA, as a global and multi‐cultural organization, facilitates professional development and international exchange of information and ideas, promotes the rule of law, defends the independence and freedom of lawyers worldwide, and emphasizes friendship, collegiality and networking among members. OBJECTIVES: UIA’s objectives, free from all political and religious considerations, are: * To provide benefits for members including cross‐border information and idea exchange, legal training, and development of productive personal and professional relationships. * To advance on a global basis the fundamental principles of the legal profession, including the peaceful resolution of disputes. * To promote the rule of law. * To defend lawyers' independence and freedom to practice their profession.

EU Legislative Interests

The main policies targeted by UIA are those related to human rights; Rule of Law; gender equality; environmental law; access to justice; victims’ rights; criminal justice; civil justice and cross-border litigation; judicial cooperation between EU countries; digitalization of justice systems; E-evidence; business & human rights; immigration and asylum; family law; European labour market; EU antitrust regulations; accession to the ECHR negotiations; data protection; artificial intelligence; taxation issues; IPR and copyright protection; Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and sustainability.

Additional Information

The UIA's main sources of revenues are membership fees paid by its members as well as income earned from its seminars and annual congresses. In addition, UIA established an institutional partnership agreement with the information and legal solutions publisher, LexisNexis. Specific actions undertaken by UIA-IROL (Institute for the Rule of Law) have been funded by the Fonds de Dotation de l'UIA pour l'Etat de droit. Financial support and/or sponsorship by public and/or private actors may be provided in connection with UIA events (seminars, Webinars and congresses).
