Mission & Goals
As a liberal humanist umbrella organization, Unie Vrijzinnige Verenigingen (DeMens.nu) has 38 member associations, each with a specific mission. These organizations are active in a range of areas, including: social work; cultural and artistic work; youth development; supporting reproductive rights and services; and the education sector, including around comprehensive sexuality education. The objectives of Unie Vrijzinnige Verenigingen (DeMens.nu) include: • Developing the liberal humanist community; • Supporting and coordinating initiatives and actions at the request of member associations; • Taking initiatives and carrying out actions in consultation with member associations; • Organising, managing and developing non-denominational moral services. • Representing the liberal non-denominational community in relation to the government and third parties. As an organisation concerned with promoting an inclusive and universalist vision of human rights at the national and international level
EU Legislative Interests
Unie Vrijzinnige Verenigingen (DeMens.nu) monitors, awareness-raises, and advocates around EU legislative proposals or policies related to human rights and democracy. It looks to ensure that all human rights legislation is conceived and implemented in an inclusive and intersectional way, and that CSOs are ensured space to feedback and help shape EU legalisation. Specific initiatives of interest include: - EU Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy 2020-2027 - EU mechanism on democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights - EU Council conclusions related to human rights (with a focus on gender, health, education) - European Parliament annual report on human rights and democracy in the world - European Parliament reports on Human rights, gender, and health - EU Initiatives on Gender Equality, such as the Gender Equality Strategy, Gender Action Plan, and Roadmap on women's rights - Anti-discrimination directive - Article 17 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (TFEU),
