Domain name system (DNS)

Mission & Goals

ICANN, a nonprofit public-benefit entity, created in 1998, is the organization coordinating domain names and numbers across the world, ensuring the stable and secure operation of the Internet's unique identifier systems and especially the Domain Name System (DNS); and playing an important role in maintaining the Internet’s stability and security. ICANN, through its multistakeholder governance model, brings together governments, non-commercial and commercial stakeholder groups, civil society, and individuals. Each group represents a different interest on the Internet. Collectively, they make up the ICANN community, which develops policies for the DNS through a consensus-driven bottom-up process.

EU Legislative Interests

ICANN follows policies and initiatives of the EU that may have a direct or indirect effect on the stability and security of the Internet and the Domain Names System (DNS); or that may affect the bottom-up multistakeholder model of governance for the Internet. Policies that ICANN may follow include: AI Act, Cybersecurity Act, DSA, DMA, eID, GDPR, GIs, NIS2, Virtual Worlds initiative.

Communication Activities

ICANN routinely organizes events related to Internet governance and publishes technical documents on technological advancements that are relevant for the DNS.
