Mission & Goals

IAVI is a nonprofit scientific research organization that develops vaccines and antibodies for HIV, tuberculosis, emerging infectious diseases (including COVID-19), and neglected diseases such as snakebite. Our mission is to translate scientific discoveries into affordable, globally accessible public health solutions. IAVI conducts scientific, clinical, socio-behavioural and policy research in Africa, India, Europe, and the U.S., and accelerates scientific discovery and development by fostering unique collaborations among academia, industry, local communities, governments, and funders to explore new and better ways to address public health threats that disproportionately affect people living in poverty. We advocate for political and financial support for Global Health R&D, for incentives to facilitate international and public-private R&D collaborations, and for policies across the R&D continuum to facilitate equitable access to affordable biomedical interventions.

EU Legislative Interests

IAVI’s advocacy and outreach activities focus on increasing awareness of and support for global health R&D, and particularly vaccine R&D, within EU partnerships and institutions. Our main focus has been on the newly launched EU Research Framework for Research and Innovation (Horizon Europe) and on the new EU-Africa Global Health Partnership. We have submitted official responses to public consultations, occasionally met with officials from DG Research and agencies such as HERA. We have also worked closely with DSW, a non profit organization which advocates for increased attention for global health and development issues. However, we have not directly lobbied for any specific legislative or policy changes (for example, by engaging with MEPs or proposing questions or resolutions in parliament). We do not employ any lobbyists or paid agencies to conduct lobbying or influencing work in Brussels.

Communication Activities

IAVI has over the last few years responded to several public consultations launched by the Commission on research and innovation and global health issues, including on the EU-Africa Global Health and on innovative health. All such responses have been submitted in writing via official online portals and recorded in Commission records as being received from IAVI as an NGO. No external agencies or consultants have been involved.
