Mission & Goals

The European Institute for Animal Law & Policy (The Institute) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to achieve a better treatment of animals in EU law and policies. The Institute conducts advocacy work in the following fields: animal protection, environmental protection, citizens' rights, workers' and consumers' rights, and economic justice.

EU Legislative Interests

EU farm animal welfare legislation; Common Agricultural Policy; Environmental legislation as it relates to animal agriculture (e.g. IED, Nitrates Directive) and wild animals (e.g. Birds Directive, IAS Regulation, Fauna & Flora Regulation, Zoos Directive); agricultural laws (CAP Regulations, EU Marketing Standards Regulations, Quality Schemes Regulation); consumer information (e.g. FIC Regulation); EU economic law as it relates to sustainability reporting requirements (e.g. Extra-reporting requirement Directive); human rights and whistleblower protection (e.g. Whistleblower Directive); food safety and animal health (e.g. Animal Health Law); antimicrobial resistance policies (e.g. Veterinary Products Regulation); EU trade policy; EU internal market policy; EU competition policy (UTPs Directive).

Communication Activities

We regularly publish research notes on topics pertaining to EU farm animal protection, including: Animals in the EU Agricultural Policy (2021); Resisting Antimicrobial Resistance: Regulating the Use of Antibiotics (2022); Animal Welfare Standards in the EU Organic Certification (2022); The Treatment of Wild-Caught Fish Under EU Law in EU Animal Agriculture (2023). The Institute also published two special reports: For a More Humane Union: A Legal Assessment of EU Farm Animal Welfare Laws (2022) and Chick and Duckling Killing: Achieving an EU-Wide Prohibition (2023). Lastly, the Institute offers a free bi-monthly newsletter featuring EU animal and policy updates.
