Mission & Goals

The Collective for Countering Islamophobia in Europe is a CSO founded in Belgium on November 1, 2020. It aims at acting against rejection, hatred and discrimination against people and institutions due to their real or supposed belonging to the Muslim faith. The CCIE is an independent, non-governmental, non-political and non-religious organization solely funded by its sympathizers (members and donors). It works towards equality and justice. The main activity of the CCIE is centered around three axes: 1.Legal and psychological support for victims of Islamophobia. 2.Raising awareness on Islamophobia (organizing campaigns, events and training sessions). 3.Conducting surveys and analyses on Islamophobic bias at European level.

EU Legislative Interests

At a time where Islamophobia reaches an all-time high, European Muslims and other racialised minorities are increasingly suffering from discrimination under governments that oppose diversity, true inclusion and effective equality. It is therefore crucial to consolidate public awareness and policies at an international level about the threat posed by racist hatred and political persecution of people and institutions due to their real or supposed belonging to the Muslim faith. With other CSOs, the CCIE has called on the European Institutions not to leave Islamophobia unchallenged and to carry out its responsibilities by effectively tackling all forms of racism and structural discriminations. Following the inaction regarding racism against Muslims by the EU institutions, 41 civil society organisations have joined forces to express major concerns via letters sent to the European Institutions that were drafted by the CCIE. A press release was also issued following these letters. Amongst necessary measures to fight Islamophobia, the letters requested the appointment of a coordinator on anti-Muslim hatred alongside the coordinator on antisemitism as well as the allocation of resources for all coordinators working on different forms of racism. The CCIE has, in collaboration with ENAR, organised meetings to discuss strategies to effectively combat anti-Muslim hatred. The CCIE is targeting the legislative proposals and policies: 1.EU anti-racism strategy 2.Council Directive 2000/78/EC of 27 November 2000 establishing a general framework for equal treatment in employment and occupation 3.Council Directive 2000/43/EC of 29 June 2000 implementing the principle of equal treatment between persons irrespective of racial or ethnic origin 4.Proposed Council Directive on implementing the principle of equal treatment between persons irrespective of religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation 5.Upcoming proposal on minimum standards for Equality bodies

Communication Activities

On its social media, the CCIE has over 300 000 followers and regularly organises communication campaigns and grassroots initiatives. It is also planning on organising a European survey to monitor the spread and evolution of Islamophobia.
