Mission & Goals

ASTA’s mission is to be an effective voice of action in all matters concerning the development, marketing and movement of seed, associated products and services throughout the world. ASTA promotes the development of better seed to produce better crops for a better quality of life.

EU Legislative Interests

ASTA is interested in EU legislative proposals and policies that may impact the trade and movement of seeds; for example but not limited to, phytosanitary requirements for seed movement, the EU legislative initiative for plants produced by certain new genomic techniques and the revision of plant and forest reproductive material legislation

Communication Activities

In the most recently closed fiscal year, ASTA in collaboration with Euroseeds hosted several webinars on the role of new genomic techniques in plant breeding, seed improvement, the sustainability of agriculture and the incentivization of SMEs.

• International Seed Federation (ISF): Active participation in multiple sections/committees with representation on the Board of Directors • Asia and Pacific Seed Association (APSA): Representation on the Executive Committee • Africa Seed Trade Association (AFSTA): Representation on the Board of Directors • Seed Association of the Americas (SAA); Representation on the Board of Directors

Organisation Members

Two affiliated organizations of ASTA are • First the Seed Foundation. The First the Seed Foundation’s mission is to conduct education, outreach and communication on the value of crops and food produced from seeds. Through the development of public education and media tools and economic research, the Foundation serves to coordinate the unified effort needed to educate today's world and tomorrow's work force about the importance of the seed industry. • Seed Science Foundation. The Seed Science Foundation’s mission is to address seed and plant science challenges, and to encourage plant breeding education and seed research in support of the everchanging needs of the global seed industry. The Foundation will also fund public research programs in basic seed science and to explore opportunities for public and private research organizations to further knowledge about how seeds work.
