Mission & Goals
The purpose of the Association is to constitute a Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) network/platform to support and promote safe, reliable and efficient operation of the civil nuclear systems by facilitating the co-operation among its members. Thereby, the Association shall provide to the nuclear community, through collaborative projects and international cooperation, a scientific and technical basis to develop R&D&I strategies, to support the implementation and deployment of innovative and sustainable solutions including those for innovative reactor and fuel cycle concepts as well as for the use of civil nuclear for electricity generation and beyond. The Association shall mobilise industries, academia, research centres, Technical Support Organisations (TSOs), Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and others stakeholders within the European Union (EU) to work in partnership.
EU Legislative Interests
Nuclear energy gained increased recognition in EU policies, including its inclusion in the Net Zero Industry Act and the European Commission's 2040 Climate objective communication. This shift represents a more technology-neutral approach in EU energy policies. The European Commission formally launched the European Industrial Alliance on SMRs in May 2024. This initiative aims to accelerate SMRs' development, demonstration and deployment by the early 2030s and strengthen the EU supply chain and expertise. A key contribution on behalf of the three pillars, NUGENIA, NC2I, and ESNII is to finalise and present the SNETP Deployment Strategy. The completion of the strategy will mark a significant milestone in aligning stakeholders, setting priorities, and driving the next actions to meet Europe’s energy and climate goals. SNETP will continue to actively contribute to the R&D roadmap of the SMR Alliance and closely foster, support and monitor collaborative projects, aiming at: • Extending the life of the existing nuclear fleet and deploying new capacities, • Development, demonstration and deployment of new nuclear technologies including within the European industrial alliance on SMRs, • Broadening access to EU funds beyond Euratom, • Investing in skills and workforce development.
