Mission & Goals
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VUA) is a leading research university that ranks among the best in Europe. Founded in 1880, VUA has always been known for its distinctive approach to knowledge. VUA is an open organisation which for several years has been one of the leading academic research centres in Europe, strongly linked to people and society, attracting prominent scientists from both the Netherlands and abroad. It houses 9 faculties and 14 interdisciplinary research institutes, and it employs many researchers who are among the best in their respective fields, at both national and international level. Academic research and education at VUA is characterised by a high level of ambition, and encourages free and open communications and ideas. In 2023, VU hosted 31.949 students and 4.729 staff members, of which 1.872 scientific staff. VUA comprises 9 faculties, ranging from biomedical and sciences to humanities disciplines.
EU Legislative Interests
All relevant EU initiatives in the areas of research, innovation and education, which include (but are not limited to): FP7, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, Marie Curie and ERC; EU Higher Education Policy; European Research Area; EU Research Policy; EU Global Approach; better regulation; European Cloud Initiative; Innovation Union; Digital Single Market Strategy, etc.
Communication Activities
On a regular basis, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam organises seminars that broaden and expand on the knowledge on European policy within the organisation. Also, researchers of the VU University Medical Centre regularly (co-)organise conferences on European financed research programmes and research projects.
