Mission & Goals
OSI Europe Foundation is an independent sister organisation to the Open Source Initiative (OSI), a global charity at the heart of the Open Source Community for over 25 years, recognized globally as the authority defining Open Source. Its mission is to promote software freedom and the adoption and use of Open Source software, through education, advocacy, and policy work in Europe.
EU Legislative Interests
OSI Europe Foundation focusses on ensuring Open Source software can thrive. This means paying close attention to all legislation relating to software and products with digital elements, such as the AI Act, Cyber Resilience Act, Product Liability Directive, Data Act, Digital Markets Act and others. However, we also cover a wider range of Open Source tangential issues, such as copyright, public procurement, and any other legislation with an impact on Open Source Software.
Communication Activities
The focus of our outreach is both informing legislators about Open Source, and building a bridge between Open Source Communities and lawmakers. It is our hope that this will enable lawmakers to make laws with Open Source in mind, enabling increased adoption that leads to wider societal benefits. This can involve one-on-one meetings with lawmakers and their staff, participation in and organisation of events in the European Institutions, and attendance of a wide variety of policy events.
