Mission & Goals
Hivos is an international development organization guided by humanist values. Together with citizens and their organizations, we aim to contribute towards just, inclusive and life sustaining societies where people have equal access to opportunities, rights and resources. We work in partnership with others in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America on three impact areas: 1. Civic Rights in a Digital Age: create a public sphere where civic rights are protected and where inclusive debate flourishes. 2. Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: support rightsholders in their efforts to claim the power, agency and leadership necessary to drive change. 3. Climate Justice: using an inclusive and rights-based approach, we put justice, equity and human rights at the core of global climate action. Our approach is solution driven, and we build wider movements for change by amplifying and connecting voices.

Additional Information
We have provided all required financial information under header 14 above, including all EU contributions to Hivos in 2023 and 2024, as well as all contributions that exceed 10% of the total budget and was over Eur 10,000. The financial information on 2024 and 2025 will be updated as soon as the financial year 2024 is closed. Hivos is a not-for-profit foundation and our mission is to amplify and connect voices that promote social and environmental justice and challenge power imbalances. We particularly empower marginalized rightsholders to raise their voice and demand freedom of choice in the three impact areas that we described under Goals/remits of our organisation, as part of header 7 of this application. One of the strategies we employ for promoting the voices and choices of marginalized people while at the same time strengthening civil society is influencing policy and practices. Hivos helps to create an enabling (political) environment in which the alternative solutions of frontrunners and multi-actor initiatives can flourish. We help rightsholders and local organizations make their voices heard, get a seat at the discussion table, and influence decisions that affect their lives. Hivos has been recognized by the Dutch tax authority as a charity. Hivos receives funding from bilateral, multilateral, EU and foundations mainly in the form of grants to implement programs and projects that contribute to the above-mentioned mission. Hivos is strictly not-for-profit and is not linked in any way to commercial interests and our purpose for applying to register with this Transparency Register is to promote societal causes in the public interest in line with our mission.
