Mission & Goals
We believe that a strong democracy governed by the rule of law is a prerequisite for living together in freedom and equality. The power of technology should be in the hands of the people who strive for this. We work through research, movement building, campaigning, advocacy and legal action in the Netherlands and the EU. We are a Dutch foundation ("stichting") with over a dozen staff members, hundreds of volunteers, a board and an advisory council. We are supported by thousands of individual donors, companies and private foundations. To ensure our independence, we do not accept money from governments.

Bits of Freedom's main activities are related to privacy and control of personal data, and freedom of communications.

Bits of Freedom is a founding member of European Digital Rights (EDRi).
Organisation Members
We receive donations from individuals and private foundations, and no not have members or affiliates.
Additional Information
We receive many small donations. In the financial year of 2024, ~€ 180.000 was re-granted to other (digital) human rights organisations.
