Mission & Goals
Archives Portal Europe Foundation (APEF) is the organisation behind Archives Portal Europe (APE), a comprehensive and open resource on archives from and about Europe, enabling new knowledge and new connections to be made. The portal information about nearly 7,200 institutions, over 1,200 of which actively provide content. Users can search in more than 670,000 archival collections including more than 320 million items with and without digital representations. During the past decade, APE has established a growing network of regional, national, and thematic aggregators of archival content next to working with cultural heritage institutions directly, where the route via an aggregator might not exist yet. Originally funded under ICT-PSP, APEF is now running mainly on membership fees. It is part of the projects for deploying the common Europeana Data Space for Cultural Heritage (Digital Europe) and the Cultural Heritage Cloud (Horizon Europe).
EU Legislative Interests
APEF has been part of the Europeana DSI initiative in the framework of the CEF programme and is currently a member of the common European Data Space for Cultural Heritage consortium. As such, APEF is following the new Digital Europe Programme (DEP), with a particular attention to area 5 "Ensuring a wide use of digital technologies across the economy and society", pillar 5 "Education and culture". Furthermore, APEF is a member of the ECHOES consortium that will work on the development and the deployment of the Cultural Heritage Cloud under the Horizon Europe programme.
Communication Activities
APEF regularly promotes activities in the context of the Europeana DSI - now the Data Space for Cultural Heritage - as well as in the context of the Cultural Heritage Cloud. Furthermore, APEF more widely emphasises the importance of access and reuse of digital cultural heritage, with a special focus on archival heritage, through its blog and its social media. The foundation also runs the international archives domain aggregator Archives Portal Europe and promotes related activities of and through its network members.
