Mission & Goals

We are an independent, grassroots, crowdfunded advocacy group consisting of individuals who have come together to fight for freedom and democracy for Hong Kong. SWHK members come from all walks of life and are united by a shared vision. Following the promulgation of the National Security Law in June 2020 by the Chinese Communist Party, we are one of the only few remaining grassroots organisation representing the voice of Hongkongers operating in the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.

EU Legislative Interests

Policies and initiatives that are likely to have an impact on Hong Kong and the Hong Kong diaspora communities within the EU, such as those legislative proposals recommended by the European Parliament in the following resolutions: “Resolution of 18 July 2019 on the Situation in Hong Kong” “Resolution of 19 June 2020 on the PRC National Security Law for Hong Kong and the Need for the EU to Defend Kong Kong’s High Degree of Autonomy” “Resolution of 20 January 2022 on Violations of Fundamental Freedoms in Hong Kong” “Resolution of 7 July 2022 on the Arrest of Cardinal Zen and the Trustees of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund in Hong Kong” “Resolution of 15 June 2023 on the Deterioration of Fundamental Freedoms in Hong Kong, Notably the Case of Jimmy Lai”

Communication Activities

SWHK EU ensures policymakers remain updated on key Hong Kong developments through a monthly newsletter distributed directly to the offices of numerous MEPs. Moreover, SWHK EU has engaged with various policymakers in individual EU member states including Sweden, Germany, and Lithuania, among others, pushing for lifeboat schemes, stricter trade policies, and de-risking from China, with a focus on Hong Kong and the national security law. We have launched joint statements, such as the "Joint Statement Condemning Hong Kong Authorities and the Bounty on Hong Kong Activists in Exile", signed by 9 Hong Kong grassroots organisations, 5 MEPs, and 4 MPs, and contributed to parliamentary resolutions. We have aided in organising Hong Kong-focused events such as a UK-Germany Parliamentary Exchange in Berlin, and an event in Brussels involving MEPs from numerous EU member states, communicating these events to the Hong Kong diaspora community in Europe for participation. In January 2024, SWHK launched an event connecting representatives of 11 EU-based Hongkonger grassroots organisations with members of European Parliament to communicate consensus from the Hong Kong diaspora community regarding key Hong Kong democracy issues directly to EU representatives.
