Mission & Goals

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) was founded in 1986 as a nonprofit public-interest law firm and operates under the direction of an executive director, corporate officers, and a board of trustees. SELC uses the power of the law and policy to protect the environment in six Southeastern US states: Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Our attorneys work in all branches and at all levels of US and state government to defend healthy air and clean water; forests, coasts, and wetlands; our scenic countryside; and the special character of our communities. When international policies and practices threaten the natural environment of SELC’s 6-state, Southeastern US region, SELC is prepared to challenge those threats. Working with regional, national, and international partner organizations, SELC advocates for sound international policy that will protect the valuable resources of the Southeastern US.

EU Legislative Interests

The proposals/policies for 2026 are the same as in 2025: EU Renewable Energy Directive Amendments, EU Deforestation Regulation, and member states' bio-energy policies. The development of EU and member states' energy policy as it pertains to burning wood pellets to generate electricity and industrial heat, particularly as they relate to the import of wood pellets from the Southeastern U.S.
