Mission & Goals
Soċjetà Agrarja represents and safeguards the interests of the agricultural and rural community in Malta. Its primary goal is to promote sustainable, viable, and socially responsible agriculture, while preserving traditional practices and ensuring the long-term stewardship of land and natural resources. The organisation works to support farmers and landowners through advocacy, policy engagement, and dialogue with national institutions. It seeks to contribute constructively to legislative and regulatory processes affecting agriculture, land use, rural development, environmental protection, and food production. Soċjetà Agrarja also aims to raise awareness of the cultural, economic, and environmental value of agriculture in Malta, promote education and knowledge-sharing, and encourage practices that balance productivity with biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
EU Legislative Interests
Soċjetà Agrarja engages with European Union policies and legislative initiatives that have a direct or indirect impact on agriculture, land management, rural communities, and food systems. Its areas of interest include, but are not limited to: The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), particularly measures related to direct payments, rural development, agri-environmental schemes, and support for small-scale and traditional farming systems. EU legislation concerning land use, soil protection, and sustainable land management, including policies addressing land fragmentation and the protection of agricultural land. Environmental and biodiversity policies affecting agricultural activity, including implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, Nature Restoration initiatives, and related agri-environmental obligations. Climate and sustainability policies under the European Green Deal, insofar as they affect agricultural production, water use, and rural livelihoods. Food safety, food quality, and labelling legislation, including geographical indications and measures supporting local and traditional products. Policies related to rural development, social cohesion, and the viability of rural communities, especially in small island and peripheral regions. The organisation seeks to contribute constructively to consultations, stakeholder dialogues, and policy discussions at EU level, ensuring that the perspectives of Maltese farmers and landowners are adequately represented.
