Mission & Goals

Snam is Europe’s leading operator in natural gas transport, with a network of approximately 38,000 km in Italy and abroad. The company also deals with storage, holding one-sixth of the European Union's entire gas storage capacity, and regasification, where it ranks as the third largest European player, managing (or co-managing) an annual capacity of 28 billion cubic meters. In Snam, we promote supply security and energy integration between the various available sources, making the most of the versatility of the methane infrastructure so that it can be used for the development of decarbonised gas (primarily biomethane) and the CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology. We are also pursuing ways of raising energy efficiency and gas mobility. The path we are committed to involves reducing direct greenhouse gas emissions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, and Net Zero on all emissions - including indirect emissions from associates and suppliers - by 2050.

EU Legislative Interests

Snam is interested in following all the EU initiatives related to security of energy supply, energy infrastructure, renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable finance, the gas and hydrogen market design legislation. Snam also follows all the EU initiatives that promotes the EU Green Deal, the Clean Industrial Deal and the energy and climate long-term transition with a vision towards 2030 - 2050, with a focus on energy security (supply and infrastructures). In particular: Hydrogen and decarbonized Gas Package; Security of gas supply Regulation; Gas storage Regulation; Clean Industrial Deal; Action plan on affordable energy prices; Grids Action Plan; Regulation on methane emissions reduction in the energy sector; Regulation establishing a Union certification framework for carbon removals; Energy Performance of Buildings Directive; Renewable energy directive (RED); TEN-E Regulation; Union list of projects of common interest and CEF funding; Energy efficiency directive; Energy taxation directive; EU Emissions Trading System (ETS); Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM); Deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure (AFIR); CO2 emission performance standards for light and for heavy duty vehicles; Automotive action plan; FuelEU Maritime Regulation; Taxonomy Regulation and delegated acts; State Aid Regulation; Energy and Environmental Aid Guidelines; REPower EU Regulation; Corporate sustainability reporting directive; Corporate Sustainable Due Diligence; Omnibus I; Net-zero Industry Act; European Hydrogen Bank; Industrial Carbon Management Strategy; Industrial decarbonisation accelerator act; Directive as regards acceleration of permit-granting procedures; Environmental Omnibus; Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in Energy; Clean investment strategy; Legislative initiative on CO2 transportation infrastructure and markets.
