Mission & Goals
SHIELD is an international initiative focused on reclaiming influence over how technology shapes our lives. Its core goal is to build a global alliance of individuals, organizations, and community networks, especially those most impacted by digital systems, to foster shared leadership, collective action, and accountability. SHIELD supports grassroots changemakers and their communities, promotes inclusive and values-led online safety and AI education, and facilitates cross-sector collaboration. It prioritizes real-world experience and community-driven solutions over top-down approaches, aiming to ensure that technology reflects diverse voices and serves the public good
EU Legislative Interests
EU AI Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Act) and amending Regulations (EC) No 300/2008 and (EU) 2019/818 and Directive (EU) 2022/2041.
Communication Activities
SHIELD has organized several communication activities that align with EU priorities on digital governance, online safety, and ethical AI, even if not explicitly framed as EU-focused. Speakers and attendees of the events were from various countries around the world, also EU countries. These include the following online events: SHIELD Global Online Safety Conference, AI Companions: Understanding the Risks & Staying Safe, and the upcoming Therapy Bots & The Future of Mental Health, all of which addressed themes relevant to the EU AI Act and Digital Services Act, such as transparency, mental health impacts of AI, and youth protection. These events were free and open to the public and contributed to broader discourse on responsible technology.
