Mission & Goals

Sequoia Climate Foundation is a private foundation based in Irvine, California. We were founded in 2020 as it became clear that the scope, pace, and complexity of the climate crisis required a targeted philanthropic response. We believe in a world powered by clean energy, where all people are protected by policies that have averted the worst effects of climate change. We assess opportunities and strategies in our grantmaking through four criteria: ● Speed at which we can realize impact: Immediate climate action is needed to avoid dangerous climate tipping points and irreversible damage; ● Scale of emissions reductions: We focus on the strategies, tactics, and geographies where our grantees can have the greatest impact; ● Cost effectiveness: We have no time to lose and our resources are dwarfed by the money and influence of fossil fuel interests so we need to be extremely efficient in our use of resources; ● Success: We invest in solutions that have the highest probability of success.
