Mission & Goals
SeaO2 is a Dutch Ocean Carbon Removal company committed to addressing climate change through removing CO2 from the atmosphere at gigaton-scale. Carbon Removal technologies are Negative Emissions that are crucial to achieve Net Zero. SeaO2's solution, Direct Ocean Capture, relies solely on renewable electricity and seawater to extract CO2 from the surface of seawater and consequently from the atmosphere in a scalable and cost-effective way. The process uses electrochemistry and vacuum to transform the existing dissolved inorganic carbon in water into gaseous CO2, which is extracted and permanently stored in geological formations or utilised into products such as concrete or alternative fuels like green methanol with third-party providers. This cutting-edge technology is derived from research at the University of Delft.

Communication Activities
Through our membership with key organizations such as the Carbon Business Council, Negative Emissions Platform (NEP), and CO₂ Value Europe, we actively advocate for the recognition and integration of marine-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) and CO₂ Utilization (CCU) within EU climate policies. We push for their inclusion in carbon markets like the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF), while emphasizing the need for robust, credible frameworks to scale carbon removal technologies. Additionally, we actively participate in EU events, such as the NEP-Carbon Gap European Parliament Workshop & Exhibition, to showcase the importance of mCDR and our technology, as well as taking part in BlueInvest Days to highlight the significance of our technology and the broader blue economy in the EU. Our involvement extends to providing feedback on public consultations, including those for the Clean Industrial Deal and the EU Ocean Pact, in collaboration with our partners, to ensure that marine CDR is recognized and prioritized in future policy frameworks. Furthermore, SeaO2 has joined 33 other signatories in calling on EU negotiators to ensure the Green Claims Directive clarifies requirements for climate claims, which is crucial for enabling private investments in permanent carbon removals. We continuously monitor policy updates and collaborate with partners and industry coalitions to stay aligned with policy developments, ensuring that marine CDR remains a key component in EU climate strategies. Our goal is to contribute to joint papers, policy discussions, and events that further advocate for the integration of marine CDR into EU policies, supporting a science-based, scalable approach to achieving climate neutrality.
