Mission & Goals

The Sea Ranger Service is a social enterprise that has pioneered a model which simultaneously creates social and environmental impact. It is on a mission to affect social-economic regeneration of coastal regions whilst improving conservation of the world’s oceans. The Sea Ranger Service has three primary activities to achieve this mission: 1) Training young people to become Sea Rangers as a start to their maritime career, 2) Carrying out sustainable offshore services and ocean conservation work at sea and in coastal areas, 3) Constructing purpose-built sailing work vessels to carry out this work cost-effectively and clean. The unique entrepreneurial approach which the Sea Ranger Service has developed creatively combines services in youth engagement, shipbuilding, offshore services and environmental conservation to tackle youth unemployment, create modern seafaring jobs and regenerate marine biodiversity globally.

EU Legislative Interests

The Sea Ranger Service is in dialogue with the European Commission and members of the European Parliament to utilise its work towards concrete implementation of objectives as laid out in the European Green Deal and Biodiversity Strategy. As the Sea Ranger Service already works on a national level (there is broad and close collaboration with the Dutch government), the organisation now foresees working with other European governments on establishing its model in different countries to aid the implementation of aspects of the European Green Deal and Biodiversity Strategy on a national level.

Communication Activities

The Sea Ranger Service is focused on offshore work, therefore only has limited involvement with policy work or communication campaigns. However, the organisation does produce: 1. Annual reports, accessible via https://searangers.org/governance/ 2. Short web video series called Sea Ranger Service TV: http://bit.ly/SeaRangerTV 3. Organisation of State of the Service event for its investors, supporters, twice a year. Now taking place online. In addition, the Sea Ranger Service has been invited to attend an online meeting on December 9th, 2020 with members of the cabinet of Frans Timmermans with the objective to share experiences of establishing the Sea Ranger Service model in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with the Dutch government. The Sea Ranger Service believes the concrete implementation of biodiversity management and restoration policies, which it has achieved in the North Sea thanks to a set of unique public-private partnerships with Dutch governmental agencies, may interest the European Commission in relation to future implementation of the European Green Deal and Biodiversity Strategy.
