Mission & Goals
Samorka is the association of the Icelandic electricity industry, district heatings, waterworks and sewage utilities in Iceland. The federation was founded in 1995 when the Federation of Icelandic Electric-works and the Federation of Icelandic District Heatings and Waterworks merged. All district heating services and electric-works in the country are members of this federation, in addition to most waterworks and sewage utilities. Samorka operates in the four fields mentioned above. Among the purposes and tasks of the federation are forwarding the mutual interests of its members, guarding their interests in mutual projects, fostering research and gathering information for its members as well as for public authorities, hosting seminars and conferences and acting on behalf of the members in mutual projects.
EU Legislative Interests
EU legislative proposals and policies are targeted in areas that affect the interests of Samorka and its members. Those include legislative proposals and policies on energy, environment, climate, energy market regulations, transport and any other legislative proposals, policies or initiatives that affect the interests of the entities that Samorka represents. Iceland is not a EU Member State but adopts EU legislation (regulations, directives and decisions) into Icelandic legislation via the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) between the European Union and EFTA - The European Free Trade Association, where Iceland is a member. The Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) extends the Single Market of the EU to three out of the four EFTA countries, namely Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. Within the EEA there is free movement of goods, services, capital and persons. Citizens of all 30 countries have the right to move freely throughout the EEA - to live, work, set up business, invest or buy real estate, with a few minor limitations in certain sectors
Communication Activities
Samorka holds events, publishes press releases, news, reports and has a podcast that address EU policies and legislation. The focus is on legislation which affects the legislative and regulatory framework of Icelandic energy companies and utilities, as they are adopted or are in the process of being adopted into Icelandic legislation via the Agreement on the European Economic Area.
