Provide a venue for critical analysis while serving as both a hub for programmatic discussions around a modern conception of democratic socialism as well as a socialist think tank generating political alternatives . Serve as a forum in Germany and abroad fostering dialogue between socialist forces, movements, and organizations, left-minded intellectuals, and non-governmental organizations

EU Legislative Interests

The Brussels Office works on alternative strategies of European integration with a strong focus on democratic development, social cohesion and the role of civil society. Its work centres on concepts of economic democracy, public and common goods, participatory and inclusive democracy, as well as peace, disarmament and human security in EU external action. The office closely follows and engages with EU legislative and policy processes that are linked to its programmes, in particular in the fields of social policy, labour and welfare, migration and fundamental rights, climate justice, industrial transformation, and democratic governance. A key area of work in 2026 concerns the negotiations and debates around the post-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). The office analyses and accompanies discussions on the future orientation of the EU budget, including the balance between competitiveness, social cohesion, climate action and external policies. Particular attention is paid to the implications of MFF reform for civil society organisations, social programmes, cohesion policy, and funding instruments supporting democracy, fundamental rights and participation at European and national level. Relevant dossiers followed in 2026 include, among others: - the implementation and further development of the European Pillar of Social Rights and related initiatives on minimum income, adequate wages and social investment; - the revision and future orientation of EU cohesion policy and structural funds in the context of the next MFF; - governance and social conditionalities of EU climate and industrial policies; - EU policies on migration and fundamental rights; - debates on EU democracy and rule of law mechanisms, civic space and participation; - EU foreign, security and peace policies. Through its work, the Brussels Office contributes to policy debates by providing analysis, facilitating dialogue between civil society actors and EU institutions, and promoting democratic, social and rights-based approaches to European integration.
