Mission & Goals
RiverImpact (RI) is a Dutch ocean and aquatic ecosystem protection company dedicated to turning plastic waste into value through responsible waste and plastic management in rivers. With its effective barrier technology, RI prevents the flow of waste and plastic into oceans, thus protecting aquatic ecosystems and species. Area of focus is the Latin American region in general and the country of Guatemala in specific.
EU Legislative Interests
The project contributes directly to key EU policy priorities including: - the EU Plastics Strategy, by processing plastic waste into durable construction materials - the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive, through the interception of riverine plastic before it reaches marine environments - EU objectives on circular economy and sustainable infrastructure, by collecting, sorting and processing waste into durable construction materials. By preventing plastic waste from entering marine environments and transforming recovered plastics into valuable construction materials, the action contributes to both environmental protection and sustainable economic development. The initiative also aligns with the objectives of the EU Global Gateway strategy, which promotes sustainable infrastructure investment, circular economy solutions and partnerships with the private sector in partner countries. By developing a scalable circular infrastructure model for river plastic interception and processing, the project contributes to the Global Gateway’s priorities on green transition, resilient infrastructure and sustainable value chains.
