Mission & Goals

The RDA Foundation ASBL was set up in April 2020, to act as the European regional office for the Research Data Alliance. In March 2021, the organization was transformed into the RDA ASSOCIATION AISBL [RDA AISBL], allowing it to operate as a nonprofit on an international level. RDA AISBL is the legal entity representing the 6,000+ European members of the global Research Data Alliance. The European RDA community has been growing since Sept 2012, through four grants funded by the European Commission, Directorate General for Networks, Content and Technology [DG CNECT]. All four grants were Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) with various organisations involved in the project consortia. In 2019, the RDA Council agreed with the proposal to set up a legal entity as part of the European sustainability plan for the RDA community in Europe.

EU Legislative Interests

European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Strategic Research Innovation Agenda (SRIA). The European Council Conclusions on Shaping Europe's Digital Future [https://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/ST-8711-2020-INIT/en/pdf], approved on 9 June 2020, states that “open science principles and Research Data Alliance recommendations are useful for supporting the decision-making authorities in promoting a flexible common approach for the collection, processing and availability of data” and welcomes this in the context of the development of EOSC. This is a very significant occurrence and a very important recognition from one of the highest European Union bodies of the work of RDA.

Additional Information

Grants received from European Commission 2021: 807 322, 53 € Grants received from European Commission 2022: 324 977, 19 € Grants received from European Commission 2023 (books not closed yet): 2 582 757, 59 € All of these Grants are Pre-financing and the Projects have not been finished. Our organisation is almost entirely funded through European grants. As a result, our annual costs are relatively high, since these grants are fully allocated to carrying out our activities. These expenses mainly consist of personnel costs, office and operating expenses, project-related expenditures, and other operational costs directly linked to our advocacy and representation activities. As our work falls almost entirely within the scope of the register, the total expenditures of the most recently closed financial year accurately reflect the annual costs associated with these activities.
