Mission & Goals

RGI Mission: RGI is a unique collaboration of NGOs and TSOs from across Europe engaging in an ‘energy transition ecosystem-of-actors’. We promote fair, transparent, sustainable grid development to enable the growth of renewables to achieve full decarbonisation in line with the Paris Agreement. RGI has 3 main strategic objectives: 1) RGI explores and communicates the need for grids for enabling the transition to a fully decarbonised energy system based on renewables. 2) RGI engages in an ‘energy transition ecosystem-of-actors’ by establishing a strong network of external stakeholders that are part of the energy system of the future. 3) RGI, within this ‘energy transition ecosystem-of-actors’, takes action to increase the joint understanding about the role and need for sustainable grid infrastructure in a fully decarbonised energy system. In conclusion, RGI communicates and promotes findings and outcomes of its initiavites to relevant European and national institutions.

EU Legislative Interests

In line with its mission and according to its strategic objectives, RGI contributes actively to climate, energy and environmental legislative processes and to the achievement of their policy objectives.  RGI intends to contribute to the objectives of the European Green Deal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To do so, RGI monitors and provide input to the following EU initiatives (Please note that the following list is not exhaustive and selects the most relevant and cross-cutting legislation for RGI): EU 2040 climate target; Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action, incl. NECPs; Guidelines for trans-European energy infrastructure, esp. feeding into the Ten-Year Network Development Plans (TYNDP); Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), closely following provisions on Renewables Acceleration Areas (RAAS) and speeding up permit-granting procedures for RES and related infrastructure; EU Grid Action Plan and the implementation of its Pact for engagement; EU Hydrogen Strategy; EU Adaptation Strategy; EU Circular Economy Action Plan, esp. Critical Raw Materials Act Regulation, as part of the Green Deal Industrial Plan for the Net-Zero Age; Maritime Spatial Planning Directive and Maritime Strategy Framework Directive; EU Nature Restoration Law; EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030; Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD); EU Birds and Habitats Directives; EU Forest Strategy; Follow up on the Conference on the Future of Europe; EU Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF)

Communication Activities

RGI’s projects, events and publications are done to promote a fair, sustainable and transparent development of grid infrastructures within the mentioned policy issues.  Highlights from RGI’s event, communication and advocacy activities can be found in our latest 2023 annual report at following link: https://renewables-grid.eu/fileadmin/user_upload/Files_RGI/RGI_Publications/RGI_Annual_Report_2023_digital.pdf More recent info relating to RGI’s events can be found here https://renewables-grid.eu/activities/events.html

Organisation Members

RGI has 29 Members (15 NGOs and 14 TSOs) and 3 Supporting Members. The list of our members can be found here: https://renewables-grid.eu/about/members.html  Furthermore, RGI established and coordinates the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature (OCEaN) and its regional chapter in the Mediterranean Sea, bringing around 50 NGOs and Industry Members together. They aim to accelerate the deployment of offshore wind energy and grid infrastructure while ensuring alignment with nature protection and healthy marine ecosystems. A full list of Members can be found here: https://offshore-coalition.eu/about-us/ Lastly, RGI and IUCN kicked-off the Global Initiative for Nature, Grids and Renewables (GINGR), aiming to support the just and sustainable energy transition by providing assessment tools to quantify contributions to Nature- and People-Positive goals. The initiative has an International Advisory Board, and is structured in 3 Technical Working groups. More information about the initiative is available here: https://www.gingr.org/about

Additional Information

1) RGI benefits from the LIFE NGO Operating Grant. However, its award is subject to the submission of annual work programmes, without guarantee of funding if they do not obtain a sufficient threshold during their evaluation by CINEA. 2) RGI coordinates several funding supporting European consortium, namely the ECF and the VELUX grants, and the PAC 2.0 project. This means that a portion of the funds received is re-granted to NGOs and Foundations across Europe, enabling them to lead projects with TSOs and wind developers.
