Mission & Goals
The ProTerra Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that advances and promotes sustainability at all levels of the feed and food production system. A commitment to full transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain and concern for corporate social responsibility and the potential detrimental impact of herbicide-resistant, genetically modified crops on ecosystems and biodiversity is at the heart of everything we do. The ProTerra Foundation’s mission is to be a global network of businesses supporting more sustainable agricultural practices, in the food and feed supply chains, where relevant the conversion to non-GMOs and full respect of workers and communities’ dignity. We envisage a world where all businesses contribute to the protection of biodiversity by switching to sustainable production, conserve natural resources and ensure that local communities are treated with dignity and respect.
EU Legislative Interests
Multistakeholder representation through ISEAL Membership. Non-GMO activities through the membership of the ENGA https://www.enga.org/ ENGA represents national non-GMO industries and economic operators (agriculture, food and feed processing, retail, certification) as a single European association. Starting from October 2021 Emese van Maanen is representing ProTerra in the ENGA as a board member.
Communication Activities
Our activities connected to LCA: We create dialogues to fight against LUC, support DCF production and engage companies to become more sustainable: https://www.proterrafoundation.org/news/proterra-environmental-footprint-report-2024/ We launched a CO2 calculation project to help organisations investing in sustainability and certification to differentiate from non-certified material. Updates of these projects for several commodities can be found on our website. Since December 2019 ProTerra publishes specific water and CO2 footprint calculations. Our goal is to provide primary data to have more accurate emission calculations and share these with the GFLI database.
